Welcome To Brigantine, New Jersey

Brigantine Photo Slideshow (coming soon)

Before European settlers arrived, Lenni Lenape native Americans enjoyed the area they called “Watamoonica” (summer playground) for its natural beauty, fishing and sunshine. The Lenni Lenape presence has been traced back as far as the 1500s. Henry Hudson’s ship, the Half Moon, sailed past Brigantine Beach on September 2, 1608, and the infamous pirate Captain William Kidd was thought to have buried some of his treasure somewhere under the sands. The name “Brigantine” comes from a type of ship used in the 1600s, and over 300 ships were wrecked on Brigantine’s dangerous offshore shoals over the two hundreds years that followed.

The island was owned by several families who owned large tracts of land called plantations in the 1700s, and it served as a haven for American privateers who would sail out and attack British ships during the Revolutionary War. Following the migrations of whales from New England coastal waters, whalers launched attacks on the huge mammals from Brigantine Beach.

The Brigantine Improvement Company built hotels on what was then known as North Atlantic City. The construction of a railroad linking Philadelphia with the area, sixteen trolleys that ran the length of the island, and steamboats to ferry people back and forth in the late 1800s, increased Brigantine’s popularity as a warm weather destination. Notables such as President Grover Cleveland came to vacation, but hard times came to the island and by the year 1917 the boom had gone bust. It wasn’t until the 1920s that the availability of the automobile caused the Island Development Company, the successor to the Brigantine Land and Transportation Company, to construct a bridge linking the mainland to the island in 1924.

The land boom was on.  Brigantine Lighthouse was built, as well as a school and boardwalk, and the city improved its water and sewerage systems. The stock market crash of 1929 plunged Brigantine and the rest of the nation into the Great Depression and hard times returned. World War II came, and so did major storms in 1944 and 1962, but following the war Brigantine’s development continued in a steady growth and the good times returned.

Brigantine today has a population of 12,595 (2000 Census). It was incorporated as Brigantine Beach Borough by the New Jersey legislature in 1890, reincorporated as the City of Brigantine City in 1897, renamed the City of East Atlantic City in 1914, and finally incorporated as Brigantine in 1924.

Today, Brigantine is South Jersey’s “best kept secret” with beautiful beaches that provide a hideaway for families and summer visitors. People enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, parasailing, close access to all kinds of recreational activities, and entertainment at the nearby Atlantic City casino/hotels.

Brigantine’s wide coastal shoreline, lovely inlets, bays and coves are a great place to enjoy all that is available. Vacationers enjoy whale and dolphin watching cruises, and visits to the nearby Sea Life Museum, Brigantine Wildlife Refuge, and auto and hiking trails through 20,000 acres of wetlands. People can also visit the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a private, nonprofit organization that rescues and rehabilitates marine mammals and sea turtles for re-release into the wild.

Those who love the game of golf visit Brigantine Golf Links, an authentic 1927 Scottish Links championship course open to the public year round (weather permitting), rated as the Number One course in the Northeast by American Golf Corporation, and also certified as an Audubon Sanctuary.

Visitors also enjoy such attractions as the Summer Concert Series held at the 26th Street and Brigantine Avenue Gazebo, a stroll along the Sea Wall at the north end of Brigantine Avenue to watch the dolphins play in the ocean, and a visit to the Brigantine Historical Museum at 3607 Atlantic-Brigantine Boulevard.

Brigantine is one more reason why folks come to enjoy the New Jersey shore, and its rich history, atmosphere and colorful past add to the fun.
